EDGEHOG – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Piece is worked in the round from the snout and towards the back. The head is worked with double crochets, embroider 2 eyes on the head, work the body with pouf stitches and work the behind with double crochets.

SNOUT AND HEAD:
Use hook size 3.5 mm and colour black in DROPS Lima.
Work diagram A.1 (snout). Read COLOURS above and switch to the colour for head. Then continue in the round as follows: Crochet A.2 (= beginning and end of the round), work A.3. Remember to keep the crochet tension.
When last round in A.2 and A.3 remains, change to the colour for body before crocheting the last round. After last round there are 20 double crochets + 1 chain stitch on the round. Don’t cut the yarn. Embroider the eyes as explained below.

EYES:
Fasten strand from snout and head on the inside of head. Embroider 2 small eyes on the head with colour black (1 eye = 1 flat stitch of approx. 4-5 mm). Embroider eyes between 4th and 5th round on head and with approx. 2 cm between each eye – see photo.

BODY:
Continue with the colour for body and crochet in the round as follows: Crochet A.4 (= beginning and end of the round), then crochet A.5 a total of 10 times around the body. When A.4 and A.5 are done in height there are 10 pouf stitches, 10 chain stitches, 10 half treble crochets + 2 chain stitches at the beginning of the round. Now work the behind as explained below.

BEHIND:
Fill the hedgehog with some cotton wool, and continue to fill the piece when working.
Continue with the colour of the body and crochet in the round as follows: Crochet A.6 (beginning and end of the round), and crochet A.7 a total of 2 times around the body. When A.6 and A.7 are done in height, there are 2 double crochets + 1 chain stitch at the beginning of the round.
Cut and fasten the yarn.

Creating fuzzy hedgehog quills
With dark brown fuzzy yarn and 2.5mm hook, surface crochet with sc onto the dark brown part of the body. Using fuzzy yarn means it’s okay to make a mistake since it won’t be immediately visible.
Crochet around as you normally would in a spiral fashion and ensure you cover the entire back with fuzz.

Assembly
Cut two pieces of white felt into small crescents to match the size of the black brads.
Glue the brads and white felt in place as the eyes.
Insert the doll’s eyes (used as a nose here) into the snout piece and sew the snout in place.
Sew on the lips.
Sew on the arms, feet, and ears.
Use dark brown yarn to make eyebrows with the backstitch technique.
Glue a small yellow felt circle onto the center of the flower.
Use dark brown eyes shadow to give the eyes some depth and dimension. Apply with the help of a cotton bud.
Dab on some pink blush on the cheeks and the small center of the lips.

Do not join. Pull tightly to close. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Snout (make 1):
With worsted weight yarn and 3.25mm hook, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 4 sc into the MR (4 sts).
Rnd 2: *Sc in first st, inc in next st, repeat from * once more (6 sts).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. With black crochet thread and a tapestry needle, stitch around one of the stitches of round 1 (i.e. up through the centre of the snout, *out the centre of the MR, down through the top of the stitch, repeat from * several times until a triangle-like shape forms.)
Move on to assembly below!

Assembly:
– Insert 10mm safety eyes between rows 13 and 14 of the front panel, counting 2 sts in from each side.
– Stitch snout onto the front panel between the eyes between rows 11 and 13.
– Stitch each side of Scarf #1 horizontally to the front panel underneath the snout, i.e. each short side is stitched down but the scarf is still detached on the top and bottom. (I forgot to take a picture of this step during actual assembly so the bottom photo is illustrating using a small swatch in place of the front body panel).

– Place a stitch marker at the middle-top, middle-bottom, and middle-sides of both panels.

– Place both Panels together (the worsted panel should be centred on top of the back panel). With a tapestry needle and a long length of fur yarn, whip stitch the panels together, starting at the middle-top stitch (where you’ve placed stitch markers). As you stitch around, ensure the stitch markers on each panel line up with each other. The back fur panel will naturally curve to create a dome as you stitch it around the front panel.
– When only a small portion of the panels remains open, stuff lightly. Finish stitching panels together.
Weave ends.
– Using your fingers, fluff the fur yarn around the edge of the front panel if needed.
– Stitch the ears onto the front panel. Weave in ends.
– Insert Scarf #2 underneath Scarf #1. Stitch in place if desired.

Attach a hanging loop to the top if you’d like to use it as an ornament.
